Strong exports offset weak domestic excavator sales in China

In February 2026, China’s excavator sales fell 10.6% year-on-year, marking the first decline in nearly 14 months. The downturn was mainly driven by the long Spring Festival holiday and cold weather in northern China that suspended construction activities, leading to a notable weakening in domestic demand.

Steel consumption for excavator production reached 229,100 tons in February, down 10.61% year-on-year.

For the first two months of 2026, total excavator sales hit 35,934 units, up 13.1% year-on-year, showing a pattern of weak domestic demand but strong export growth.

Domestic sales totaled 15,478 units, down 9.19% year-on-year, in line with seasonal off-season trends. Exports reached 20,456 units, surging 38.8% year-on-year.

The export share of excavators rose to 60.79% in February, a three-year high, supported by robust overseas demand for infrastructure and mining projects.

Looking ahead to 2026, major projects under the 15th Five-Year Plan, along with transportation and energy infrastructure investment exceeding CNY 7 trillion, will be rolled out. Coupled with the resumption of construction activities, domestic excavator demand is expected to rebound, and the industry’s production and sales are likely to reach new highs for the full year.
